Two women in a classroom learning English

English as a Second Language

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are a ministry of Vineyard Columbus. We are dedicated to equipping refugees and immigrants with teaching which increases their functional grasp of the English language in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. We offer a more relaxed Summer Program, with our regular program kicking off this fall in September.

This is a relaxed opportunity for potential volunteers to hear about the ESL program, ask questions, and share ideas about how you might best serve.  So many options are available!  Teachers are always our greatest area of need (certification not necessary).  Listen to our current volunteers talk about their amazing and sometimes surprising experiences with the program.

Save the Date for Upcoming Volunteer Trainings

August 1 | 7-8:30pm and August 8 | 7-8:30pm
Vineyard Community Center, 2nd Floor

Volunteers need only to be willing to love our international friends in practical ways by serving in the following areas:

  • Greeters: Our ESL students are eager to interact with people who enjoy giving warm smiles and speaking welcoming words as they enter the classroom.
  • Teachers: If you have a heart for internationals and enjoy teaching, we need volunteers to teach and assist in our daytime classes on Mon, Wed, Fri from 10-11:30am, and Tuesday evening ESL classes from 7-8:30pm.
  • Conversation Table Leaders: We have a vibrant ESL program and are always seeking volunteers to assist as conversation facilitators on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9-10am.
  • Sewing Teacher: A curriculum is already established and available to teach.  We are looking for a skilled sewer who is interested in sharing their love of sewing!
