At Vineyard Columbus, we dedicate infants and young children instead of baptizing them because baptism, in the New Testament, is a public declaration of someone’s personal decision to follow Jesus. A baby, of course, isn’t yet able to make that decision. But that doesn’t mean we wait until they’re grown to mark their journey with God.
In the Old Testament, we read that Hannah dedicated her son Samuel in the temple. In doing so, she set him apart for something sacred—a life of love, pursuit, and service to God. In the same spirit, we dedicate children today, praying that when they grow up, they too will choose to follow Jesus and be baptized in faith.
Personally, I’ve had the joy of dedicating both of my sons at Vineyard—one just this past January! Both times were profound experiences for my wife Leah and me, for two reasons.
First, there was something holy about standing before God and our church community to publicly commit to raising our boys in the way of Jesus. It carried a similar joy and weight to taking my wedding vows—an act of intention, love, and surrender.
Second, I was honestly overwhelmed by the support we received. To hear our church family commit to walking alongside us was a powerful reminder: we’re not raising these kids alone. We’re part of a community shaped by grace, filled with people who will pray for, encourage, and invest in the spiritual lives of our children.
It’s easy to treat moments like this as just another box to check in the Christian life. But they’re more than that. They’re sacred opportunities to say: This is the kind of parent I want to be. This is the kind of family we want to become. This is the kind of community we need around us.
We hold baby dedications three times a year at Vineyard Columbus, and the next one is coming up on Mother’s Day—Sunday, May 11. Whether you’re planning to dedicate your own child or come to support a friend or family member, it’s a beautiful opportunity to make a meaningful commitment to your faith and your family.
If you’d like to participate, just register here on our baby dedication page and sign up for one of our upcoming classes on April 23 or April 27. We can’t wait to celebrate this moment with you.
