Mother’s Day is designed to be a time where we celebrate the gift of motherhood! For some, this means carrying life or birthing life into this world and for others, it means receiving life to love and nurture or remembering a loved one through their legacy. From the time the desire to be a mother is planted in their heart to receiving their child in their arms, you see mothers preparing themselves for the mission ahead: taking care of their bodies, praying over their wombs, preparing for a new life, seeking wise counsel, building community, advocating and cheerleading for their child, and so much more. Motherhood simply cannot be confined to words. It is an experience to behold.
Wise women have said, “Motherhood is a journey, not a destination”. Rather you are a Biological Mother who carried or delivered a child, A Mother who has lost her precious child, an Adoptive mother, a Chosen Mother, Spiritual Mother, or remembering a Mother who has been called to be with the Lord, there is reason to count each blessed moment of every encounter. Sometimes our birth mothers were only able to get us here and couldn’t or chose not to stay and God’s love prevailed, so He sent someone else to “water the seed” (i.e., you) that they planted. Mothers help us to move through the pain(s) of life and focus on the promises of God. They inspire us to be who God is calling us to be, even when we are far from the preferred path! Are you this woman to someone? Is there a woman in your life that pours into you? Celebrate her.
“She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed…”
- Proverbs 31:26-28
If Mother’s Day generates feelings of sorrow, may you be encouraged and rejoiced by the sweet moments that abound in your heart for your beloved. May you give freely what has been bestowed unto you and reflect the love you have received onto others so that they too will be blessed.
